About Us
Established in January 2021, UNJUST C.I.C (UNJUST) is a not-for-profit organisation specialising in challenging discriminatory culture, policies, and practices within policing and the Criminal Legal System. We are committed to holding State agencies accountable for their conduct and treatment of Black, Asian and racialised ethnic communities.
Whilst not a UK incident, the police killing of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man in America, caused an outcry that had a global ripple effect. The unprecedented Black Lives Matter UK protests shifted focus to British cases of injustice. This united people and raised awareness of the racial discrimination experienced by Black, Asian and racialised communities at the hands of the police and the criminal legal system.
During the life-changing year of 2020, when COVID-19 was rife and social distancing was being enforced, police across England and Wales gave unlawful fixed penalty notices, increased their use of stop and search, and were not wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. The racial discrimination and resulting disparity were shocking and disappointing. It became clear, that even in a global pandemic, policing could not treat everyone fairly and use its powers proportionately and lawfully.
Simply put, enough was enough; the events of 2020 were the catalyst for the formation of UNJUST.
